Whitt (journalism and mass communication, U. of Colorado) collects ten essays on American writer Carson McCullers (1917-1967), whose novels and other writings are often described as Southern Gothic. Following Whitt's introduction to McCullers and her work, essays discuss McCullers in relation to the tradition of Southern women's nonfiction prose, the daughter as outlaw in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and The Member of the Wedding, femininity in the The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (a collection of short stories), replication and the mathematics of togetherness in The Member of the Wedding, and lesbian desire in the novels of McCullers.
