Gendering The Nation-State: Canadian and Comparative Perspectives

Inspired by a workshop held June 2004 by the Canadian Political Science Association in Winnipeg, these 12 essays address how notions of masculinity and femininity work in processes of nation and state nationally and internationally. Using a comparative framework and taking a multidisciplinary approach, contributors describe Euro-American nation-state formation in anti-and post-colonial contexts, the Soviet/Russian transformation, gender and nation in literature for immigrants, assembling women and gendering assemblies, feminist ideals and bureaucratic norms in new reproductive technologies, market populism and its impact of public policy in Australia and Canada, the politics of gender at the International Criminal Court, women and social policy reform in Canada, gender inequalities and citizenship in the era of "new social risks," neoliberal gendering of citizenship, the constitution of women's citizenship in Canada and Quebec, and the differences between gendering nation-states and city-states.
