Many previous studies on the early expansion of the Ottoman state have placed Islamic holy war ideology at the center of their explanatory frameworks, relying on one form or another of the Gazi Thesis of Paul Wittek. Lowry (Ottoman and Modern Turkish studies, Princeton U.) examines Wittek's work and rejects the thesis. He argues that the equating of "holy war" and the concept of the " Gazi " is a fundamental mistake. The fact that many of the Gazi warriors were in fact Balkan and Greek Christians, partly due to the Ottomans' desperate need for manpower, is of central importance for understanding the Ottomans.
