The A to Z of the Broadway Musical

Everett (musicology, U. of Missouri-Kansas City) and Laird (musicology, U. of Kansas) provide a dictionary of the Broadway musical that reaches as far back as 1866. Brief entries are presented in alphabetical order by musical name, person, or term, with information on the original Broadway run and principal creators, description of the show itself, or individual contributions. Revues, operettas, musical comedies, megamusicals, and rock and jukebox musicals are included, as are producers, directors, choreographers, orchestrators, and actors. A brief history and chronology are provided. An appendix lists winners of the Tony Award for Best Musical from 1949 to 2006. William A. Everett is associate professor and coordinator of musicology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, where he also serves as chair of the Division of Composition, Music Theory, and Musicology.

Paul R. Laird is professor of musicology and director of the Musicology Division at the University of Kansas, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music history and directs the Instrumental Collegium Musicum.
