Changing the Face of the Waters: The Promise and Challenge of Sustainable Aquaculture

This study addresses policy, social, and technical challenges facing aquaculture, provides orientations and recommendations for World Bank client countries. and makes suggestions about the Bank's role in the industry. It outlines information about policy adjustments, catalytic investments, and entry points for the Bank and other investors for creating an environmentally friendly, economically-efficient, and sustainable aquaculture. Governance, codes, guidelines, legislation, and recommended practices, as well as the role of the public and private sectors and the institutional frameworks for development and management, were considered. Topics covered are current trends, the impact of aquaculture on health, technology, building pro-poor aquaculture, and catalyzing aquaculture in less-developed countries, with specific discussion of Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The study drew upon previous work and work in progress by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the WorldFish Center, the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific, and the Norwegian salmon industry. Sixty-seven World Bank projects and projects of international financial institutions were also reviewed. The book is intended for policy and decision makers in aquaculture, fisheries, and natural resource management; food industry professionals; scientists; and development partners.
