Kalliney (English, U. of Kentucky) examines class in 20th-century English fiction and the problematic terms of national identity during England's transition from an imperial power to its integration into the global cultural marketplace. The text focuses on three broad historical phases to explore the relationship between domestic social geography and the waning empire--turn-of-the-century land reform between the Boer War and WWI; welfare state reforms, the dissolution of the empire, and large-scale immigration during the three decades following WWII; and the emerging global economy beginning with the 1980s.
