Tree Of Liberty: Cultural Legacies of the Haitian Revolution in the Atlantic World

Garraway (French, Northwestern U.) brings together 10 essays that examine the cultural, literary, and philosophical legacies of the Haitian Revolution. They consider stories, myths, and heroes in literature and their connections to race, nation, and class; aspects of antislavery and anticolonialism in the Revolution; and the political ideologies seen in the texts it produced such as correspondence by Toussaint Louverture and other ex-slaves. Contributors are scholars of French and francophone studies, English, comparative literature, history, Latin American and Caribbean studies, and African American studies from the US and Canada. The idea for the book came out of a symposium, "The Haitian Revolution: History, Memory, Representation," held at Northwestern U. in October of 2004, where earlier versions of five of the essays were presented.
