This 3-volume resource, part of a larger series directed at high school students, presents the many fields of scientific study within the context of their history and methods of research, in order to provide students and the general reader with the larger context of scientific principles and activities from their inception through the present. The text is written in an accessible narrative style, detailing the history of the topic's study, its scientific foundation and basic precepts, and accompanied by a wealth of additional materials, including inset boxes with vocabulary and definitions, specific cases that illuminate the larger topic, excerpts from primary sources, lists of bibliography and websites, and many b&w photos and images. Controversial approaches and politics throughout history are thoroughly examined. A lengthy glossary precedes each volume; V.3 contains a chronology and general index.
