Drawing from interviews with students at Lincoln Square High School in New York City, Butler (communication, Western Connecticut State U.) explores how students make meaning of media and media education in the context of a small theme-based school that emerged from school reform in the city. She finds that media education is uncomfortably enfolded into the start-up school, and that students have neither linguistic nor conceptual tools to talk about media, media education, or school reform.
