The Heart and Soul of Change ─ Delivering What Works in Therapy

This work encourages readers to engage with contributors in scholarly critique of traditional evidence-based psychotherapy practice drawn from the model of pharmacotherapy. The authors object to the medicalization of psychotherapy on the grounds that the data do not support it. The common factors model presented draws on the work of Saul Rosenzweig to create an alternative, research-based paradigm of psychotherapy, which holds that therapeutic efficacy depends on the patient's experience and on the patient-therapist relationship. Coverage encompasses empirical foundations for the common factors model, psychiatric drugs and common factors, clinician monitoring of treatment outcome, and special populations. Coming 10 years after the first edition, this second omits discussion of common versus specific factors. In an effort to demonstrate the power of client feedback to legitimize psychotherapy and substance abuse services to third party payers, this edition adds chapters on youth psychotherapy and substance abuse treatment.
