American Buddhism As a Way of Life

This unique collection explores the interaction between the no-self spirituality and the all-me culture. Editors Storhoff (English, University of Connecticut) and Whalen-Bridge (English, National University of Singapore) organize their study through three perspectives particular to Buddhism: the work of two teachers important to the American scene (apropos the Buddha); the impact of Buddhist ideas on contemporary American social problems ( Dharma ); and familial and social relationships and communal bonds ( Sangha ). Within these domains, 15 distinguished contributors, mostly academics with longstanding scholarly and personal involvement in Buddhism, explore the timeless fundamentals but also explore new and challenging matters such as bioethics, identity theft, gay/straight tension, and end-of-life decisions.
