Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember

Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember provides uncommonly personal insights into life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. On August 29, 2005, the huge storm pummeled Mississippi with fierce winds, a center more than seventy miles wide, and a tidal surge in excess of twenty feet.
Members of the Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts tell their stories of those awful days. Despite desperate circumstances and with great generosity of spirit, these witnesses to one of the greatest natural disasters in North American history join with friends and neighbors to record their experiences in a broad diversity of voices, almost fifty women in all.
A Vicksburg resident and noted photographer, Melody Golding came to the coast as a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Her photographic journal of those days accompanies this text. Ellen Gilchrist, whose residence in Ocean Springs suffered damage, provides an essay; and Mary Anderson Pickard, whose home Katrina destroyed, writes a moving coda. Royalties from book sales will aid Mississippi State Committee artist members.
