What Works In Distance Learning: Guidelines

O'Neil (U. of Southern California) and contributors describe their research on the best management practices to use in distance learning, the results of which they present as strategies. They address multimedia, instructional, learning, assessment, motivation, self-regulation and management strategies, as well as transition and implementation issues. Within each they provide a set of guidelines. For example, in the case of instructional strategies, they describe strategies based on providing the learner control of instructional navigation, providing working examples and practice, effective feedback, and on teaching concepts, process knowledge, causal principles, and procedural knowledge. For each they provide the basis of the guideline, the degree of confidence, commentary, references, a glossary and a profile of the anticipated user.
