Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land

Apfelbaum, an international ecology consultant, and Haney (forest ecology, U. of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) offer a handbook, partly for owners of land who want to restore its health after often decades of abuse and degradation, but also for government agencies that have become stewards of land secured for conservation, and would like to stop and reverse the damage done to it. The first half is devoted to principles of ecological restoration, covering connecting with the land, an overview, developing a restoration plan, implementing restoration, and monitoring progress. The other five chapters survey the application of these principles to grassland, forest, wetland, stream, and desert environments. They assume no technical background. Steven I. Apfelbaum is chairman of Applied Ecological Services Inc., a company he founded in 1975. He has worked on design, construction, management, monitoring, and research of ecosystems and has taught ecosystem restoration to land trusts, conservation organizations, and families interested in restoring their property.

Alan Haney is a forest ecologist and emeritus professor of forestry and former dean of the College of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. His research and teaching focus on ecosystem structure and function, including restoration ecology.
