An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents

This volume a first-ever effort, will broaden our understanding of middle grades schooling internationally by critically examining the education of young adolescents in 14 different countries. Rather than focusing on international competition and the comparative educational ranking of the United States, this volume provides information on how young adolescents are taught and how middle grades are organized in countries around the world. In addition, the educational successes and failures evident in the education of 10- to 15-year-olds, the indictments and praises that have been offered by supporters and critics alike, and the research that has been generated in these countries about educating young adolescents is addressed. In order to facilitate a comparative analysis across these countries, each of the 14 chapters addresses a common set of guiding questions. An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents offers, for the first time, material that will permit more fruitful discussions about the status of the middle school movement worldwide.
