Germans No More: Accounts of Jewish Everyday Life, 1933-1938

In 1940, Harvard University received hundreds of memoirs in response to its call for accounts from German-Jewish refugees to describe the period between Adolf Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor in January 1933 and the pogrom of Kristallnacht in November of 1938. Largely drawing from these archived sources, Limberg (political science, Universities of Hamburg and Berlin, Germany), Rubsaat (a broadcaster for North German radio, where he heads the section on contemporary history and policies in education), and Nothnagle (formerly, history, Europa-U. Viadrina, Germany) present first-hand accounts of Jewish life in Germany during this parlous period, particularly valuable because memories remained fairly fresh at the time they were produced. In an effort to present the most representative picture possible, the editors have complemented selections from the Harvard archives with reminiscences from the memoir collection of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York.
