From the 1970s, the Olympic Games have generated whole sequences of themed posters to which artists and designers have been invited to contribute. This book sets the posters in context of the Olympic Games' that they announce and celebrate, including memorable images for Berlin 1936, London 1948, Barcelona 1992 and Sydney 2000. It discusses the way in which the official posters were chosen and commissioned, their graphic vocabulary, design, methods of production, display, distribution and usage, as well as the reactions to them. The 150 illustrations include not only official posters for both Olympic and Winter Olympic Games, but also posters for some early, alternative or cancelled Games, as well as related ephemera and contextual issues.

Margaret Timmers is a curator based in the Word & Image Department of the V&A. She is the editor of Impressions of the Twentieth Century and Power of the Poster.
