Resulting from a ten-year research collaboration of physicians, engineers, physicists, and applied mathematicians, this work reports on such advances in understanding as the possibility of modeling air flow through all scales of the respiratory pathways, to cite one example. Editor Kulish (Nanyang Technological U., Singapore) presents chapters on the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and anatomically-based computer modeling of the pulmonary structure. He includes chapters discussing fundamentals of alveolar gas diffusion, lung-gas composition and transfer analysis, lung ventilation modeling and assessment, modeling of two-phase flow in the human respiratory system, and quantification of human physiological response to toxic substances.
