The Cave of the Cyclops on the Greek island of Youra has been used by humans at least since the Mesolithic period. In this first volume containing results of excavations, archaeologist Sampson and his team give both technical information on the findings and analytical summaries, placing these discoveries in the context of what is known of life on other islands and the Mediterranean Basin before the Bronze Age. A distinctive pottery pattern raises questions about the social makeup of the inhabitants. There is evidence for farming and the raising of livestock as well as long periods during which the site was abandoned. Plates with sketches of each artifact make up a large part of the book, along with photographs of the site and some of the finds up to the time of the Romans, who may have used the cave for religious rites.
