The New Teacher Center (NTC) works with school districts and state education leaders to design and implement mentor-based new teacher and administrator support programs. Although the NTC generally advocates a specific model of new teacher mentoring, this book sets out general principles for creating a mentoring program. The principles are designed to be applied in any setting, such as school district programs, university clinical supervision, and regional or cross-district collaborations. The book begins with a look at current research on the impact of teacher mentoring programs, then outlines principles of instructionally intensive, high-quality mentoring programs, and describes the NTC's theories and philosophies that support teachers' professional development. Four detailed case studies from urban district mentor programs in Durham, Boston, Chicago, and New York City illustrate common systemic obstacles and politically savvy strategies for overcoming them.
