This volume examines the politics of European citizenship as it has developed since the beginning of the European integration project in the 1950s, although it focuses on the period commencing with the EU Single Market Project in the mid-1980s. Authors Hansen (political science, Linkoping U. Sweden) and Hager (political science, York U., Canada) go beyond a narrow focus on normative prescriptions and legal-institutional structures and provide a broader focus on the interrelated matters of political economy, social rights, and migration, particularly as they relate to the European Union's deepening crisis of legitimacy and the asymmetries of power that underpin citizenship politics.
