Europe's Deadly Century: Perspectives on 20th Century Conflict Heritage

Archaeologists, earth scientists, and museum and heritage researchers and practitioners explain why it is important to give adequate and appropriate recognition to the heritage of Europe's conflicts, and how that heritage should be preserved and managed. The 18 papers emerged from a series of themed workshops held 2007-09 under the auspices of the European Commission's Culture 2000 Program. They cover textual, visual, and material methods of investigation; defining values and significance: memory, commemoration, and contested landscapes; public archaeology, public history: case studies in conservation and management. Among the topics are investigating seascapes of war with marine geophysics, recovering Spanish Civil War sites in the Valencia region, public engagement in the archaeology of modern conflict, whose heritage the Berlin Wall is, and public access to Second World War British heritage in Malta.
