The joint conference of the two societies first heard five papers produced by the four Welsh archaeological trusts on the early medieval church in Wales. Subsequent presentations report new research on the early medieval church archaeology of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, south-west Britain, and Brittany--one section focusing on sites and another on artifacts. A sampling of topics turns up the continuity and renewal of monastic landholding in Wales before and after the Anglo-Norman conquest, identifying British Christian sites in western Wessex, investigations on the May Island and other early medieval churches and monasteries in Scotland, a suggested typology for pre-Romanesque stone churches in Ireland, and the cult of St. Fillan's crozier and its reliquaries AD 1000-2000.
