Drawing from research he conducted during 1992-94, Fujita (Rural Development Academy, Bogra, Bangladesh) describes how Bangladesh was not blessed with the Green Revolution until a decade or more after other Asian countries beginning in the middle 1960s, and how technological agriculture benefited the rural people and economy when it did arrive. He discusses the formation of the groundwater market and rural income distribution; the emergence of waterlords; the transformation of the groundwater market during the 1990s; irrigation and agricultural development in West Bengal; credit flow from the wealthy to the poor; the fallacy and reality of microcredit; the transformation of the potato-marketing system and finance; and the local administration of development, village society, and rural classes.
