Reinforced concrete is now widely used for building frames. The concrete may be cast onthe site or precast, depending on the ease of using formwork (the wooden mold into whichconcrete is poured) on location and the number of times the process has to be repeated. Otherfactors are the nearness of the concrete plant to the site, the availability of cranes, and theconstruction schedule.
Concrete may also be compressed by tensioning its reinforcements and it is then known asprestressed. This treatment enables embedded rods or high-tensile wires to carry an amount ofdirect or bending tension without the concrete itself going into tension, making it much stronger.
Reinforced concrete can be used for skeletal structures, often based on precast units andused mainly for industrial and shed-type buildings. Concrete may also be used in a shell formof construction, where the surface is an intrinsic part of the structure. Exciting and originalshapes of shell have been designed, notably in South American and Spain. Probably the mostfamous structure, however, is the group of concrete shells of the Sydney Opera House inAustralia.
