Anyone who has seen the film Casablanca knows that one of its defining moments is when the French exiles begin to sing La Marseillaise in defiance of the Nazi officers singing of German songs. Music can have strong nationalistic overtones. Corona (Spanish and Portuguese, Ohio State University) and Madrid (Latin American and Latino studies, University of Illinois, Chicago) along with scholars in cultural studies, musicology and ethnomusicology examine contemporary trends in music in Latin American culture, how it has crossed borders with immigrants and changed as it came into contact with other musical traditions. Some authors contend that the mutations of the music help create a new cultural identity in a postnational environment. Others look at how the hybrid known as "global music" has caused a return in several areas to a greater appreciation of "pure" traditional forms.
