商品簡介
Damer (philosophy, Emory and Henry College) shows students how to attack faulty reasoning and support their beliefs and actions with good reasons. He offers a suggested code of intellectual behavior to support critical thinking, then describes the nature and five criteria of a good argument, defining a fallacy as a violation of one of those criteria. He considers 60 ways that arguments can go wrong and suggests strategies for addressing fallacies to turn bad into good reasoning. This edition has updated, refined, and replaced fallacy examples and exercises. It has numbered premises to make it easier to identify which is being addressed in the argument analysis and rewritten assignments to make fallacies more easily identifiable. It clarifies and expands on intellectual conduct principles, especially the clarity, structural, and rebuttal principles, and numbers each when referring to them. It adds the "counterevidence method," which addresses questionable premises of an argument; clarifies and expands the attack strategies following discussion of each named fallacy; reorganizes discussion of the standards of premise acceptability and the conditions of unacceptability; and reorganizes and rewrites sections on the structural criterion of a good argument and the rebuttal criterion. The fallacy of novelty and the fallacy of the elusive normative premise have been added, and the argument by innuendo has been combined with misleading accent. The question-begging-language fallacy has been added to the begging-the-question fallacy. The text expands and clarifies concepts like the distinction between inductive and deductive arguments, deductive validity, the deductive nature of normative arguments, the role of subpremises, and others, and addresses how nonrational factors affect thinking and why the fallacy of self-interest is a problem of relevance rather than a moral issue. The book lacks a bibliography. Annotation c2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
