The Continuum Companion To Spinoza

This is a research companion to the life and thought of the influential philosopher Baruch or Benedict de Spinoza (1632-77) and to the subsequent scholarship on Spinoza. The editors (professors of philosophy at Erasmus U. Rotterdam, the Netherlands) present material on Spinoza's biography that highlights current unknowns facing potential biographers, influences on Spinoza's thought, receptions of Spinoza's thought by early critics, and synopses summarizing Spinoza's writings (from the Ethics to lesser known works, such as Spinoza's Hebrew Grammar). The largest section of the book, however, occupying nearly half of its pages, consists of a glossary of short notes and minor essays on common concepts found in Spinoza. Prof Wiep van Bunge is Dean of the Faculteit der Wijsbegeerte at Rotterdam. He was previously Head of the Philosophy Department and has published extensively on Spinoza and Dutch Philosophy.
Piet Steenbakkers islecturer in the history of modern philosophy at the University of Utrecht andholder of the endowed chair of Spinoza studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam.He is a member of the international research team Groupe derecherchesspinozistes, which is now producing a new critical edition of Spinoza's works.Steenbakkersis currently involved in a research project on BiblicalCriticism and Secularization in the Seventeenth Century.

Dr Jeroen M.M. van de Ven is a specialist in late medieval history and codicology, the history of the book and the history of seventeenth-century Dutch Enlightenment thought, more particularly of the intellectual networks of René Descartes and Benedictus de Spinoza. Together with Theo Verbeek and Erik-Jan Bos, he edited The Correspondence of Descartes 1643 (Utrecht, 2003), a pilot study for a new critical edition of Descartes's correspondence. Van de Ven is currently preparing an annotated chronology in English of Spinoza's life and works (scheduled 2012).
