The Temple of Jerusalem

Dedicated to Professor Feldman (Yeshiva U., New York), the "doyen of all scholars of the Second Temple period," this volume derives from the inaugural conference of the Yeshiva University Center for Israel Studies which took place in 2008. Fine (Jewish history, Yeshiva U.) notes that this work reflects the extent to which multidisciplinary research has contributed to an understanding of the Jerusalem Temple's importance to Christians and Moslems as well as Jews. Twenty essays focus on theological issues, Roman policy, and anthropology relating to the Temple's construction, destruction, and reconstruction (actual and virtual). One author treats the debate over whether Holocaust commemoration should be linked to the date of the Temple's destruction. The volume includes photographs of a Temple model and art illustrations. Steven Fine is Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University in New York City, where he focuses upon interrelationships between the literature of ancient Judaism, art and archaeology. Dr. Fine holds a doctorate in Jewish history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, an MA in art history from the University of Southern California and a BA in religious studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
