Phillips-Court (Italian, U. of Wisconsin-Madison) shows how drama and painting in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries were mutually supportive arts, the one borrowing from the other, and how both were susceptible to the influence of philosophical thinking. Examining how playwrights took productive advantage of a devotional gaze in their writing, she argues that the refinements of dramatic literature during the period came to embody the changing epistemology of the self that had revolutionized painting in Florence and other cultural centers. The book won the 2009 Modern Language Association's Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies.
