Within the context of a three-year research project begun in 1993, the authors consider the process of apprenticeship during a time when an automated production workshop is being installed at a vocational training school in Switzerland, the Ecole Techniques de Sainte-Croix, where young men learn watch-making skills. They discuss the representations that the participants had of the training process and the objectives aimed for, pedagogical practices in the workshops, and the meaning that the participants gave to the facts observed. They examine four issues--learning in different settings, tools for training and tools for work, processes of learning, and the meanings of training activities--and discuss new competencies that are required in the use of information technologies, how and when they can be acquired, how the college kept itself up-to-date with technology, interactions between teachers and students and students in groups, and what the study implies about rethinking models of learning in training.
