Mattox (Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, France) analyzes how in those lectures he interpreted the women of Genesis, to cast light on the religious leader's broader understanding of women, and on gender and the Reformation in general. He shows how Luther appropriated hagiographies developed by his patristic and medieval predecessor, and the transformed the Genesis women into domestic saints in Protestant dress, whose actions were shaped primarily by faith and the promise of redemption.
