Onehundredandforty-fourChineselearnersofEnglishparticipatedinthestudy.Theywererandomlypairedandassignedtoeitheramaptaskorapicture-storytask.Twoexemplarsofeachtasktypewereusedonseparateoccasions(oneweekapart).Eachtaskgroupwasfurtherdividedintotwoexperimentalgroupshighcriterion(HC)andlowcriterion(LC)andacontrolgroup.BoththeHCandtheLCgroupswereinformedattheoutsetthattheywouldbeaskedtoperformanadditionalactivityuponcompletionofthebaselinetask.TheHCspeakersundertookamoredemandingposttaskactivity,andtheLCgroupalessdemandingone.Noextraposttaskrequirementwasimposedonthecontrolgroup.Awiderangeofmeasureswereemployedtoevaluatetheparticipants'languageproductionintermsofcomplexity,accuracyandfluency..
