Sjorup (feminist theology, U. of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Christensen (sociology, Coordination for Gender Studies, U. of Copenhagen, Denmark) bring together 11 essays that examine the relationship between pieties and politics, research methodologies, masculinities in various religions, and symbolic gender representations. Specifically, anthropologists, historians, theologians, and scholars of American studies, sociology, feminist philosophy, and gender studies from Europe and the US consider questions relating to Muslim piety; the relationship between feminist theory and politics; changing theological discourses; religion in the European Union between the Vatican and Muslim populations; the religiously motivated abstinence politics of the Bush administration; the feminization of Christianity in the nineteenth century and confessionalization in European society; and gender representations in architecture, fiction, and a witchcraft community.
