Public Buildings in Early Modern Europe

Presenting papers from two symposia--the third (2006) and the fifth (2008) titled Rencontres d'architecture europeene, held at Utrecht U.--this ninth volume in the Architectura moderna series is the first to represent symposia that the editors of the series did not initiate. Their foreword tells how well it fits into their mission. Leading off the 30 contributions are two pertaining to texts and theories of public buildings. Following are sections on government and justice buildings, the economy (commercial buildings), education (schools and universities), and hospitals. About one-third of the contributions are in languages other than English (French, Spanish, German). The three editors are affiliated as follows: Konrad Ottenheym (architectural history, Utrecht U., The Netherlands); Monique Chatenet (Centre AndreeChastel/Sorbonne Paris-IV, France); and Krist De Jonge (architectural history, Catholic U.
