Abu Minqar is a lightly populated (approximately 4100 people) group of small Egyptian villages in the New Valley Governorate that the Egyptian government had planned as a "self-contained" planned community in a pre-determined form. However, as this study observes, the shape of Abu Minqar "is contingent on social and spatial networks that reach beyond the bounds of the physical community, beyond the village, literally and metaphorically beyond the spaces mapped out for its existence." Ethnographically analyzing kinship networks, spatial distribution, and agricultural practices, the study examines the processes of spatial formation that have made and remade Abu Minqar and challenged the state's plans and the very idea of the "self-contained" community.
