Violence and Abuse in Society

Of interest to a wide audience of students and professionals, this four-volume reference comprises essays by psychologists, social workers, sociologists, and lawyers, among other professionals--all of whom have contact through their work with violent behavior. Each volume is devoted to a theme and is introduced by editor Browne-Miller, a seasoned scholar, teacher, and prolific author on violence and abuse (she had a 14-year affiliation with the U. of California, Berkeley, among other assignments). Volume 1 is subtitled Fundamentals, Effects, and Extremes and presents 19 essays in two sections, the first introducing the topic's scope (e.g. guns, gender violence, impact of abuse on youth, the history of infanticide) and the second focusing on global violence overviews (Nigeria, Cyprus, Poland, Malaysia, and several other countries). Volume 2 is subtitled Setting, Age, Gender, and Other Key Contexts (there's a variant of this subtitle on cover and spine in which the final word is "Elements" rather than "Contexts). Twenty-nine essays address violence in the workplace, school, among the homeless, adolescents and parents, women in the military, and toward the elderly, among other topics. Volume 3, Psychological, Ritual, Sexual, and Trafficking Issues, presents 22 essays. Volume 4, Faces of Intimate Partner Violence, 23 essays. Each volume contains indexing for the complete set.
