Pathways to Self-Discovery and Change (PSDC) is a 32-sesson curriculum for youth age 14-18 involved in the juvenile justice system. The sessions, each about for 3-4 hours long, are built around a cognitive-behavioral orientation and a strengths-based perspective. This provider's guide for treatment practitioners, program evaluators, and youth services administrators explains causes and consequences of problem behaviors and offers suggestions for assessing clients and implementing the treatment curriculum, with detailed guidelines on each session and discussion of issues such as confidentiality. There is also background on theoretical and research perspectives on adolescent development, substance abuse, and mental disorders, and a description of the cognitive-behavioral model. New to this second edition is a chapter on treating female offenders. This edition also offers greater emphasis on moral development, prosocial behavior, community reentry, and aftercare, and contains new discussions of the research rationale for session exercises and activities.
