An Artist and a Writer Travel Highway 1 North

Hunter is one of California's most recognized artists, best known for her watercolors of historical landmarks. With Stevens (English, State Center Community College District), she co-owns an art gallery in Fresno, and together they have also produced several books on California architecture and history. They provide residents and visitors with an enjoyable account of their recent trip from Big Sur's Bixby Creek, at the midpoint of the state's coast, north to the end of Highway 1 at Leggett, and along Highway 101 to the Oregon border. Illustrated with 100-plus watercolors, the memoir invites readers to reacquaint themselves with familiar favorites or discover for the first time, as did they, remarkable sites off the well-traveled road. Pat Hunter is the artist-in-residence at the Yosemite National Park Art Center and has illustrated numerous books. Janice Stevens is the author of Fresno’s Architectural Past and Stories of Service. She is a former staff writer for the Business Journal, a freelance writer for the Fresno Bee, and a college-level English composition teacher. They collaborated on the book Remembering the California Missions, which earned them the Native Daughters of the Golden West Image Award in 2010. They both live in Fresno, California.
