Did the Renaissance affect Ashkenazi Jewish women in Venice (site of the first Jewish ghetto in Europe)? This annotated English translation, opposite the original Yiddish text, of one of three sections of the 16th century manuscript likely published in Venice, Seder Nashim, ("Women"), is a lively, often funny, occasionally bawdy work in "didactic poetry" of male advice relating to women's issues. Informed by gender theory and postmodern approaches, University of Manitoba professors Fox (arts) and Lewis (religion/Judaic studies) present a chronology and introductory essays to this unique hagiography of biblical heroines in the context of medieval women's lives. They address challenges in translating a largely defunct Old Yiddish dialect spiced with Italian loan words. The work includes a facsimile of folios.
