War and Faith—The Catholic Church in Slovenia, 1914-1918

Bobic (cultural history, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts) has focused her recent research on World War I, its aftermath, and the political reconstruction of affected communities. In this revision of her 2009 PhD dissertation in modern history at the University of Oxford, she examines the Catholic Church's interpretation of the cause of the war, an interpretation that endowed the war with a moral dimension and conferred on it ideological legitimation. Her topics are the Catholic Church between the nation and the state in July and August 1914, Italy, from holy to bloody war, guardians of the true faith, Austria, and the dawn of Yugoslavia. This study may well prove to be foundational in the Slovenian study of World War I, which only began in earnest after the dissembly of Yugoslavia.
