Essays in Early American Architectural History―A View from the Chesapeake

This collection of twelve essays on architectural history examines early American structures from the central eastern seaboard. The volume is divided into sections covering the origins of American architecture, the design and building process, regional building patterns, and colonial Williamsburg. Individual papers address topics such as architectural perspectives on seventeenth century Chesapeake, the dynamics of design in eighteenth century Charleston, ecclesiastical architecture in early nineteenth century America, and the public buildings of Williamsburg. Individual articles, many of which have been previously published in architectural and historical periodicals, include black and white photographs and technical drawings.
