They outline the eight phases of the information search process, which gives students the time to identify their inquiry questions and guides them through a process of immersion to gain background knowledge and explore ideas in preparation for identifying a question or topic that directs their gathering, creating, and sharing of learning. They detail the design framework, the eight phases, and how literacy, content, and social learning are integrated in the process, as well as the learning team for guiding the inquiry. They summarize underlying research, the five tools that are needed for implementation, and examples and explanations of each phase, with sample session plans and a final chapter on connecting guided inquiry across the curriculum and grades. Carol C. Kuhlthau is professor emerita of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University, where she directed the graduate program in school librarianship rated number one in the country byU.S. News & World Report.

Leslie K. Maniotes, NBCT, MEd, PhD, is a teacher effectiveness coach in Denver Public Schools, a curriculum and literacy specialist, and a national consultant on inquiry learning and instructional design.

Ann K. Caspari is education specialist at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and director of a professional development program for preschool teachers in the District of Columbia Public School on inquiry science for young learners.
