Fashioning Models

Interdisciplinary contributors explore models and modeling from perspectives that embrace aspects of visual culture, gender, sexuality, and the body. They look at images of models and modeling and the place of models and modeling in historical and contemporary culture; they also go 'backstage' to examine modeling as work. The book draws on archival research, fieldwork inside the industry, and the voices of professional models. Of special interest is a chapter on images of African American women in early post-war America. Other topics include fashion modeling in Australia and Tokyo, and portrayals of modeling in reality TV shows. The book is illustrated with contemporary and historical b&w photos and magazine covers.
