Plutarch in the Religious and Philosophical Discourse of Late Antiquity

As a priest of Apollo/neoPlatonist, Plutarch (45-120 CE), e.g., in his Moralia and Lives, witnessed pagan monotheism and the development of Christianity in late antiquity. In this valuable contribution to Plutarch studies, Lanzillotta (New Testament and early Christian studies, U. of Groningen, Germany) and Gallarte (classics, U. of Cordova, Spain) collect revisions of papers presented at the XI Congress of the International Plutarch Society (2010). Philosophical essays discuss topics including Plutarch's view on Aristotle's influence on Middle Platonism, and the later editing of his Quastiones naturales. Among essays focusing on religion are those treating his views on the nature of God, the soul, and popular beliefs such as the evil eye; and the relationship between mystery religions and politics in his era.
