Eighteen studies of rural Canada are united by the overarching theme of "social transformation," which editors Parkins (resource economics and environmental sociology, U. of Alberta, Canada) and Reed (geography and planning, U. of Saskatchewan, Canada) describe as involving themes that include the links between local and global processes of change, the way change is often deeply rooted in place-based local action, fundamental shifts in social relationships and processes within communities, the living impact of local histories, the nature of power dynamics, the role of leadership, urban-rural interdependencies, and the role of the imagination.
