Literacy Is Not Enough ─ 21st-Century Fluencies for the Digital Age

Crockett, a designer and artist, is manager of The 21st Century Fluency Project. Here, he identifies six fluencies essential for today's students: solution fluency, information fluency, and creativity, media, and collaboration fluency, as well as global digital citizenship. He offers guidelines for developing learning units and lesson plans around these fluencies, while staying within the traditional curriculum and the Common Core standards. The suggestions are based on several principles: students now think and learn differently due to their exposure to digital technology and multimedia; teachers must provide access to digital and online resources and provide guidance on using and evaluating information; and teachers must create strong connections between school and the outside world. The book includes tools for evaluating lesson plans in terms of the fluencies, templates for developing unit plans, and four complete sample lessons plans for different content areas in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10.
