Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy 2011

Classicists and scholars of philosophy, not necessarily from the Boston area, presented seven colloquia during the 2010-11 academic year at the various participating institutions. Here are the talks and commentary on them by colleagues. They cover image and analogy in Plotinus, an Aristotelian distinction between two types of knowledge, the unjust philosophers of Republic VII, the medical background of Aristotle's theory of nature and spontaneity, attempting the political art, Aristotle on place, and Philolaus on number. Gary M. Gurtler, S.J., is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Boston College. He has published on ancient philosophy, with special attention to Neoplatonism, including a book, Plotinus: The Experience of Unity (1988).William Wians is Professor of Philosophy at Merrimack College. He has edited five previous volumes of BACAP proceedings and written numerous articles and reviews on ancient philosophy.
