Africa Yearbook—Politics, Economy and Society South of the Sahara in 2011

Some member institutions of the Africa-Europe Group of Interdisciplinary Studies (AEGIS) have produced the yearbook since 2004. In country-specific articles, this volume discusses domestic politics, foreign affairs, and socio-economic developments in the states of sub-Saharan Africa during the calendar year 2011. The newly independent sovereign state of South Sudan is included this year for the first time. The length of the articles varies according to how engaged the country is with its neighbors, Africa, and the world. Introductions overview each of the continent's quarters, sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, the United Nations and the region, and African-European relations. The authors are scholars, but the readership is intended to include journalists, policy makers, diplomats, and others as well as academics. There is no index. Andreas Mehler Ph.D. (1993) in Political Science, University of Hamburg, is Director of the Institute of African Affairs, German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Hamburg. He has published extensively on democratisation processes and violent conflicts in West and Central Africa. With Henning Melber he is managing editor of Africa Spectrum.Henning Melber, Ph.D. (1980) in Political Science, University of Bremen, is Executive Director of the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation in Uppsala/Sweden and Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Political Sciences, University of Pretoria. He has published extensively on Southern Africa and in particular Namibia. With Andreas Mehler he is managing editor of Africa Spectrum.Klaas van Walraven Ph.D. (1997) in Political Science, University of Leiden, is a researcher at the African Studies Centre in Leiden. He has published on Africa’s international relations (OAU, AU, ECOMOG) and is working on a history of the Sawaba rebellion in Niger (1954-1975).
