Development in International Law ─ A Policy-Oriented Inquiry

Qerimi (law, U. of Prishtina, Kosovo) presents a holistic understanding of development that goes beyond mere economic growth and instead seeks to optimize access by all human beings to: power, wealth, well-being, affection, enlightenment, skill, respect, and rectitude. Such an approach requires a focus, he argues, on universal human dignity, which provides a cross-cultural basis for providing policy guidance towards a justice-based world order. His proposals for promoting such a human dignity- and justice-based approach to development are based on a conceptual framework guided by attention to "six Is": institutions, information, interaction, incentives, invention, and innovation. His discussion is informed by cross-disciplinary perspectives from legal and policy sciences, economics, history, philosophy, and political theory. Qerim Qerimi, Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.) in Intercultural Human Rights summa cum laude (2010) and LL.M. cum laude (2005), St. Thomas University School of Law, Miami, Florida; B.A. and J.D., Universities of Prishtina, Kosovo, and Utrecht, The Netherlands, is a Professor of Law at the University of Prishtina and a former Visiting Research Scholar at Harvard. Widely published, he has served as advisor to the European Union, USAID and the World Bank on issues related to development and international law.
